“Is any among you sick? Let him call for the priests of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” James 5:14
If you or a loved one is seriously ill, and would like to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, please contact the Rectory Office 323-725-7578, to schedule the Sacrament. It may be done in the Rectory Office, in the home, or in the hospital.
Only a Priest may administer the Anointing of the Sick. As their schedule is very full, please make every effort to request the Anointing as soon as you fell it is necessary.
The Anointing of the Sick is a remarkable sing of God’s great love for us. It is, in his merciful way, to make sure we all have the opportunity to bring us all safely to Him in Heaven. Jesus instituted this Sacrament to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to join him in Heaven, and perhaps not spend time in Purgatory.
This Sacrament bestows a special grace on the Christian experiencing the difficulties in the condition of grave illness or old age. The oil used for the Anointing of the Sick, is referred to as “Oil of the Sick”, and is one of the three blessed by the Bishop of the Diocese at his Cathedral on Holy Thursday.
Oil of the sick is pure olive oil – nothing being added except the blessing of the Bishop. Its appropriateness as part of the outward sign of Anointing of the Sick is evident from the healing and strengthening effects which are characteristic of olive oil.
The essence of the Sacrament lies in the actual anointing and the short prayer which is recited during the anointing. In giving the Sacrament, the priest anoints the sick person on the forehead and the hands. During this anointing, the priest says ” Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his home and mercy help you with the Grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin, save you and raise you up”.
